Strength of Teamwork

Abhinav and Shaanu were siblings who lived in Bangalore. Every weekend, they would visit their grandparents’ house in Nandi Hills, which was only an hour’s drive from their home. This place was full of trees and open spaces, and it looked and felt very different from Bangalore.

Today, Abhinav and Shaanu were extra excited because they would meet their cousins, Neel and Riya, and play cricket together. In Nandi Hills, they both got their cricket bats and went to a local park. The day was going great until a small disagreement changed things.

Argument

As soon as they reached the park, Abhinav took the bat. “I will bat first, Shaanu!” he said.

Shaanu did not like that. “No, Abhinav! I want to go first!” she argued.

Abhinav and Shaanu were really close, but they also fought a lot— like a lot of siblings do. Their argument was escalating, and none of them were ready to let the other person bat first.

Neel and Riya, who had been watching them argue, walked over to them. “Why are you two fighting?” Riya asked.

“He wants to bat first, but so do I. Now, what do we do?” Shaanu said. Abhinav responded, “But I said it first, so shouldn’t I get to bat first?”

Grandfather’s Story

Their grandfather, Mr. Raghavan, was sitting on a Bench reading a newspaper. He heard Abhinav and Shaanu arguing and walked over to them.

“What’s going on kids?” he asked.

Abhinav and Shaanu felt a little bad and stopped arguing. “Daadu, we both want to bat first, but we can’t decide,” Abhinav explained.

Mr. Raghavan smiled. “Let me tell you a story, and maybe that will help you make your decision,” he said.

Abhinav and Shaanu sat down, ready to listen to their Daadu’s story.

Power of Working Together

Mr. Raghavan began telling the story. “A few months ago, your uncle and I had to carry a heavy wooden cupboard upstairs. It was too big, and we could not move it. We tried pushing, but it still would not move.”

“Then, your aunt came to help. With the three of us working together, the job became so much easier. We lifted the cupboard carefully and carried it up the stairs in no time!”

Realization

Abhinav and Shaanu thought about the story. “So, Daadu,” Abhinav asked, “Are you saying that working together is better than trying to do everything on our own?”

Mr. Raghavan agreed. “Exactly, Abhinav! When we help each other, everything becomes easier— even making decisions is easier when we work together.”

Game of Togetherness

After listening to their grandfather’s story, the four cousins started playing cricket together. This time, Abhinav and Shaanu took turns batting and fielding, and Neel and Riya cheered for them.

Instead of arguing, they worked together and supported each other’s decisions, and that made the game more fun. The day actually turned out to be one of the best afternoons the four cousins had spent together in a very long while.

Lesson Learned

As it was getting darker, the cousins decided to go back home. They were tired from all the playing but also extremely happy. Abhinav and Shaanu were also feeling closer than ever.

“Thank you for teaching us, Daadu,” Shaanu said. “We learned that it is better to work together than to argue or fight!” Abhinav smiled. “Yes, Daadu, we are like a team now!” he said.

Mr. Raghavan smiled. “That’s right! And if you are family, you should be an even stronger team. Together, you can do anything.”

Tug-of-War Team Challenge

Activity:
This is a fun game of Tug-of-War with an interesting twist! Before each round, both teams will come together and plan their strategy. Should they pull the rope all at once? Or should they wait and then pull with full force? After each round, they can change their plan to improve their teamwork and chances of winning!

Why it’s Fun:
This game helps children learn that working together and good planning can lead to success— and it is so much fun! Just like what happened in the story of Abhinav and Shaanu, the best results only come when everyone joins hands and works towards the same goal.

Products:
A strong rope
Markers or cones to mark the center and boundaries

How to Works:
Divide the children into two equal teams.
Give each team 2 minutes to discuss their strategy. Should they all pull at once, or should they take turns?
Start the game by blowing a whistle. Each team pulls the rope to bring the other team past the center marker.
After each round, allow the teams to rethink and change their tactics.
At the end of the game, discuss how teamwork and planning helped them perform better.
The team that pulls the other team past the center marker wins!
