Cousins and the Monsoon Playhouse

Three cousins named Aarav, Anya, and Aditya were spending their summer vacation together in Mumbai. Every day, they played cricket in the streets, running and laughing as they hit the ball as far as they could. After playing, they loved eating vada pav from the street vendor.

One day, the monsoon rains started. The sky turned gray, and soon, raindrops started to fall. The cousins loved watching the rain, but they also wanted to do something fun.

Planning Their Playhouses

One rainy afternoon, Anya had an exciting idea. She said, “Let’s build our own playhouses in the backyard. We can sit inside it and enjoy the rain without getting wet!”

“That sounds amazing,” Aarav replied. “We can each make our own playhouse and see whose is the best.”

Aditya liked fun challenges, so he agreed. “Yes, let’s start building immediately,” he said.

Building the Playhouses

The cousins ran around and started looking for things they could use to build their monsoon playhouses. Each of them had a different plan in mind.

Aarav did not want to waste time building so he could play as soon as possible. He found some thin plastic sheets and some sticks. He put the sticks in the ground and covered them with plastic sheets. “Wow, that was so fast and easy,” he thought.

Anya wanted her playhouse to look beautiful, but she also did not want to spend too much time on it. She found some light bamboo sticks and tied them together using strings. She then used an old bedsheet and spread it over the bamboo frame. “This should be good enough,” she said to herself.

Aditya remembered his parents telling him about building strong structures. He decided to take his time and do it properly. He used strong wooden poles and a waterproof canvas. He made sure to tie everything tightly so his playhouse would not shake in the wind. When he was done, he looked at his work proudly and said, “This will keep us safe and dry.”

Heavy Rain

Just as the cousins finished building their playhouses, the sky turned darker, and it started raining heavily. The cousins quickly ran into their playhouses.

At first, Aarav was happy in his plastic sheet playhouse. But soon, drops of water started leaking from the sides. Then the wind blew harder and completely tore his playhouse. Wet from the rain and sad, Aarav ran to Anya’s playhouse.

Anya was sitting inside her bamboo playhouse, hoping it would keep her dry. But under heavy rain, the light bamboo sticks started to shake. The bedsheet roof also became heavy with water, and little by little, the water started leaking inside. Then, suddenly—the whole playhouse fell apart.

Anya and Aarav were now both soaking wet. They had no choice but to run toward Aditya’s playhouse.

Meanwhile, Aditya sat comfortably inside his strong playhouse. The waterproof canvas kept the rain out, and the strong wooden frame did not move at all from the wind. When he heard Aarav and Anya calling his name, he welcomed them inside.

Lesson Learned

As they sat together inside Aditya’s warm and dry playhouse, the cousins thought about what had happened.

Aarav said, “I wanted to finish quickly, but I learned that rushing is not always the best idea.”

Anya said, “I also thought I could take a shortcut, but shortcuts don’t always work.”

Aditya smiled and responded, “Hard work and planning always help.”

The cousins all agreed. They realized that investing time and good planning always gives better results. If they wanted something to be strong and last longer, they needed to build it properly.

Q: What fun idea did Anya have for the rainy season?
A: Anya suggested making playhouses in the backyard so they could enjoy the rain without getting wet.

Q: How did Aarav, Anya, and Aditya make their playhouses?
A: Aarav made a quick playhouse with plastic sheets and sticks. Anya used light bamboo sticks and a bedsheet. Aditya took his time and used wooden poles and waterproof canvas to make a strong playhouse.

Q: What happened to Aarav and Anya’s playhouses when it rained heavily?
A: Aarav’s playhouse was weak and broke in the wind and rain. Anya’s playhouse started leaking, then fell down.

Q: Where did the cousins go when the rain got worse?
A: Since Aarav and Anya’s playhouses fell, they ran to Aditya’s playhouse. It was strong and dry, so they all stayed there.

Q: Why did Aditya’s playhouse stay up while the others fell?
A: Aditya used strong materials and made sure his playhouse was tied properly and waterproof. This helped it stay safe in the wind and rain.

Monsoon Playhouse Building Challenge

Activity:

Kids will build a small playhouse using materials like cardboard, fabric, and sticks. After building, they’ll test their playhouses by spraying water on them to see which one stays the driest, just like the cousins in the story.

Why it’s fun:

This activity teaches kids how to plan, use their imagination, and build something strong. It also shows how rushing through things may not work as well as taking time to build carefully.

Products:

Cardboard, fabric, plastic sheets, sticks, tape, glue, spray bottle.

How it Works:
Set a time limit for building.
Spray water on the playhouses to test which one stays dry.
Talk about which playhouses worked best and why.
