Adventures in the Rooftop Garden

Riya was a curious little girl who loved to explore. She lived in an apartment building in Mumbai, and there was always something fun to do! But her mom had one rule— she was not allowed on the rooftop garden.

“That’s Mr. Sharma’s garden,” her mother said. “He takes care of the plants and does not like anyone disturbing them. Promise me you won’t go there, Riya.”

“I promise, Mama,” Riya said. But deep down, she was still curious about what made that garden so special.

Curious Eyes

One Saturday morning, Riya’s parents were busy cleaning. Riya looked at her toy box, but none of her toys seemed fun. She looked outside, and her eyes turned to the green and beautiful rooftop garden.

“I’ll just take a tiny look at it,” she thought. “No one will know.”

She walked slowly across the living room, climbed the stairs, and opened the rooftop door. She saw a garden full of colors— yellow marigolds, red tomatoes, shiny green chilies, and even a tiny guava tree!

Riya’s eyes glittered like stars. This place looked so magical!

Naughty Adventure

Riya noticed a tiny butterfly fluttering over the flowers. She followed it as it hopped from one flower pot to another. Then she saw tomatoes. “These look so yummy!” she said as she picked one and ate it.

Suddenly, she heard a loud bark. Riya froze. It was Max, Mr. Sharma’s little brown dog. He may have been small, but his bark was scary! The tomato dropped from Riya’s hand as she ran away from the pots and plants as fast as she could.

“Who’s there?!” echoed Mr. Sharma’s voice. He was coming up the stairs! Riya panicked and hid behind a big flower pot. She had never been more scared than that moment.

Close Call

Max sniffed the air and wagged his tail. Mr. Sharma followed him and looked around his garden. “Who dared to get in my garden and disturb my plants?” he grumbled.

Just then, a pigeon flapped its wings and flew out from a nearby bush. Max barked and ran after it.

Riya saw her chance. She walked out of there as quietly as she could, then ran down the stairs and into her house. She went straight to her bed and whispered to herself, “Wow, that was SO close!”

Apology

That evening, her mother noticed that Riya was unusually quiet. “What’s wrong, dear? You are not as chatty as every day.”

Riya looked down and confessed. “I went to the rooftop garden. I didn’t mean to be a troublemaker, maa. I was just curious.”

Her mother smiled. “I understand, Riya. It’s okay to be curious, but we must respect other people’s things. How would you feel if someone started playing with your toys without your permission?”

Riya shook her head and said, “Yes, I think I would not like it, maa.”

The next day, she went to Mr. Sharma with her mother. “I’m really sorry,” she said. “I ate a tomato and ran through your garden because I was scared.” Mr. Sharma smiled. “Well, at least you liked my tomatoes! Next time, ask, and I will show you around my garden.”

“I promise!” Riya said in a very excited voice.

Lesson Learned

That day, Riya learned something important. Being curious is good, but following rules is very important too. Mr. Sharma’s rooftop garden was his special place, and he worked hard to take care of it.

She also learned that when you make a mistake, the best thing to do is acknowledge what you did and apologize. By doing so, she earned Mr. Sharma’s forgiveness and learned to be more careful next time.

Ever since that day, Riya always asked before visiting the rooftop. Sometimes, Mr. Sharma even let her help with the plants. They soon became great friends and started sharing stories about gardening and nature!
